We are excited to announce that we recently became re-certified as a BCorporation!! We’re thrilled to be rejoining the ranks of Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, Ecosia and other businesses that are leading the force for good.
We’ll be honest, it’s not an easy process. It takes considerable time and effort. (Though our wonderful team member, Roxana, made it look effortless.) But in the end, it’s absolutely worth it.
Many of us think that as a social business, with a mission to create positive social and environmental impact, we must be “good”. But the business model is just the half of it. It’s when we start to evaluate how we do business, that we really start to gain a deeper understanding of our impact and influence on the world around us.
The BCorp assessment forces companies to do an in-depth inventory on all their internal and external policies, including Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers. Not only is it a useful tool for impact measurement, it’s also an effective improvement plan for your business.
So let’s take a closer look at the results. Lucky for you all, we earned the most points in the Community framework. This considers our engagement with the community, diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as the economic impact that we deliver. We scored second highest on our Workers, a reflection of our HR policies, employee benefits and focus on mental health and wellbeing within the workplace.
We scored lowest in the Environment section. As a remote team, we are currently in the process of developing company policies around travel, prioritizing train travel over flying, off-setting emissions when flying is unavoidable, etc. As a digital company, we’re also evaluating the tools we use and considering how our technology can also be more sustainable. The experience gave us a solid understanding of where we stand now in terms of policies and programming. It also highlighted where we have room to improve and what areas we’ve been neglecting. As a social business that is committed to maximizing its positive social and environmental impact, this information will help us develop new policies to ensure that we’re on the right path.
