Politics

Politics

Politics refers to the systems and processes through which a society is governed. The laws that emerge from politics shape the way people live and are often deeply intertwined with social issues. Governments may respond directly to a challenge (such as by determining whether same-sex marriage is legal), or indirectly by crafting policies that facilitate a desired outcome (e.g., instituting a progressive income tax to reduce wealth disparity). Because politics have such an important influence on society, civic engagement is a powerful means of addressing social problems and ensuring that all citizens’ interests are represented.
