With the recent proliferation of movements like 'Lean In' #metoo and #TimesUp, it may appear that topics related to women's empowerment and gender equality are finally getting the attention they deserve. These viral movements do signify a step in the right direction, however, true equality for all is still a long way off.

Real gender equality will only be achieved when we all have equal access to the same opportunities regardless of gender or sex. This includes fair-pay and equal participation in government and society, as well as equal value and respect placed on the needs, characteristics and behaviors of all sexes.

According to the World Economic Forum, it will take 118 years to close the gender pay gap if the current development continues. Looking at this number, it is important that we question our own realities and challenge current norms.

Luckily, in the UK today there are many organisations working tirelessly on a diverse range of topics related to gender equality and women's rights.

The Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy is a research and advocacy organisation that is forging a new discourse on power and systematic oppression. They are asking difficult questions about who is represented when and how, and are trying to ensure that women (and other under-represented groups) get a seat at the table in the political realm.

There are also many organisations working on the frontlines - Women's Aid provides support for the 1 in 4 women who will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. While the Fawcett Society aims to promote gender equality through innovative campaigns and research. One aspect of their work is to ensure women are not hardest hit by economic downturn, as they often face a ‘triple jeopardy’ of cuts to jobs, benefits and vital services.
