What other factors should you consider when searching for the right organisation for you?

Beyond the high-level classification of three organisation types provided in the previous section, it is also important to understand that there are numerous other factors which influence the experience of working within an organisation. We've outlined three of the most important factors for consideration below:

1. Size

Size is arguably one of the most useful metrics to consider when deciding upon an organisation. Working in a smaller organisation will likely bring fantastic opportunities to shape that organisation’s work and take on a multi-faceted role. However, it may also limit advancement and training opportunities. Working for a larger organisation, on the other hand, will likely invert this equation.

2. Management structure (Hierarchical vs Flat)

While some organisations have rigid, hierarchical structures with clearly defined roles and levels of management, others are flatter, with increased levels of self-organisation and decentralised decision-making powers. Certain organisations even go as far as implementing a system of complete self-management, removing 'bosses' altogether and allowing employees to define their own salaries. This article on Frederic Laloux, author of the popular book 'Reinventing Organisations', provides a more in-depth exploration of self-management and its potential benefits.

We recommend conducting research into the management structure of any organisation which you're considering joining to ensure it aligns with your preferences for work and management styles.

3. Salary

While in an ideal world, we could all do our dream job irrespective of money, we know that’s far from reality. Being paid a decent and stable salary is crucial not only to ensure that you have enough money to support yourself but also so that you feel your skills and time are valued. And while salaries in non-profits and social enterprises are often lower than in the private sector, they have been improving in recent years due to a growing awareness of the importance of attracting and retaining top talent. When looking for a job it can be useful to use sites like Glassdoor and Indeed to see how the salary you’re being offered compares to other similar roles. Plus, it’s always a good idea to discuss your compensation expectations openly with a potential employer during the interview process.
