Want to put your skills to use to increase public access to free information in closed societies? That’s what you’ll be doing as Grants Officer at Vereinigung für die Demokratie (VD) e.V. VD is a non-profit organization based in Berlin that manages the independent media outlets Meydan TV ( in Azerbaijan and ROMB ( in Russia as they execute their right to freedom of speech and inform people in societies where information and freedom of speech are compromised. Our work is based on the belief that independent media is a crucial part of a free and just society. 

We are a young, international team looking for a committed and enthusiastic full-time Grants Officer to join our Berlin team. Under the supervision of the Co-Directors the Grant Officer will support the smooth operations of our media projects, with a main focus on ROMB. This entails active participation in planning, budgeting, reporting and documenting all aspects of the project portfolio.

You will:

  • support the Co-Director in the development of project objectives, activities, deliverables and related budgets;

  • create concept notes and funding applications together with the Co-Director;

  • prepare narrative and financial reports, per internal and donor requirements; 

  • analyze project performance, including social media data;

  • plan and coordinate internal and external meetings and events;

  • coordinate the preparation of materials (e.g. annual reports; handouts about the projects);

  • prepare and deliver formal and informal presentations about the project; 

  • create and complete quarterly newsletters;

  • coordinate office-related tasks;

  • be available for project-related travel;

  • perform other duties, as necessary. 

You have:

  • a university degree or professional qualification in journalism, social science, public policy or administration, management, or other relevant fields; 

  • at least 3 years of professional work experience preferred, preferably in the media or NGO sector;

  • the ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision, and can prioritize amid competing and changing demands while meeting deadlines effectively and efficiently;

  • a team player mentality, excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a culturally diverse team;

  • advanced computer skills, excellent knowledge of Excel;

  • C2 or native-level English, B1 or higher German, Russian a plus; 

  • shared values, are reliable and respectful, and will uphold our ethics and standards;

  • an interest in improving access to information.
